7 Pop Songs That Could Be Played On Christian Radio

When I was living in Senegal, Africa a teammate and I used to listen to mainstream songs and find ones that could be worship music. [Celine Dion’s CDs are a great place to start.] There were other songs that I took and would transform the lyrics a bit and make into a really funny Christian parody. I mean really, what would you do with your time during power outages and long drives across uninhabited land?

K-Love, Way-FM, J103… you’re welcome for these song suggestions. A little variety never hurt anybody. {Let’s be honest, Christian radio desperately needs variety.} So, let’s get on to the top seven pop songs that could be played on Christian Radio:

1. “Safe And Sound” by Capital Cities

And every person on www.beardedgospelmen.net said, "AMEN!"
And every person on http://www.beardedgospelmen.net said, “AMEN!”

“I could show you love;

In a tidal wave of mystery;

You’ll still be standing next to me.”

love, Jesus

2. “What About Now” by Westlife

They kind of look like the Pastors at Calvary Chapel Chattanooga. Pastor Erik did you also do a stint as a Westlifer!? (second dude from the left)

I mean, let’s be honest, this sounds like the perfect altar call song. I Have Decided is out, What About Now is in! Am I right Southern Baptist preachers? WAHOO SBC!

“This broken heart can still survive

with a touch of Your grace

Shadows fade into the light

‘I am by your side where love will find you.’”

Love, God

3. “Wake Me Up” by Avicii

This is what I imagine the services at Hillsong to be like...

I think I first heard this at Awaken Ministries, or was it at Adrenaline? Or was it at Extreme, Velocity, Ignite, the Edge, the Ramp, Fire, Courageous, Passion, Echo, Reverb, Anointed, Drive, Elevate, or Radiate??

“All this time I was finding myself, I didn’t know I was lost.”

Prodigal son…  so sweet.

4. “Don’t You Worry Child” by Swedish House Mafia

Wow! They so look like they could be the husbands to the Point of Grace girls. Match made innnn... HEAVEN! ;)
Wow! They so look like they could be the husbands to the Point of Grace girls. Match made innnn… HEAVEN! 😉

Seriously, Way-FM pick this up. “Heaven’s got a plan for you,” sounds like the first point to the KGP. Talking about a Holy Spirit rave: I’ll bring the glow sticks. No need for drugs. #moshforjesus

“There was a time

I used to look into my father’s eyes.

In a happy home

I was a king, I had a golden throne.” – Jesus talking about Heaven

“Those days are gone,

Now the memory’s on the wall.

I hear the songs

From the places where I was born.” – Jesus as an adult

“Upon a hill across a blue lake,

That’s where I had my first heartbreak.

I still remember how it all changed.”– Jesus at Calvary

5. “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri

Oh, she would so fit in at Mars Hill church. Don't you think Pastor Mark?!
Oh, she would so fit in at Mars Hill church. Don’t you think Pastor Mark?!

This is some Jesus Calling material. Sisters, you know what I’m talking about!

“I have died everyday waiting for you

Darling, don’t be afraid I have loved you

For a thousand years

I’ll love you for a thousand more

Time stands still

Beauty in all she is

I will be brave

I will not let anything take away

What’s standing in front of me.” -Jesus

6. “When I Look At You” by Miley Cyrus

mileycyrus

…because we’ve all been there. Pit of despair, where’s my chocolate? This song really does have some great truth to it! I love it.

“When I look at You

I see forgiveness

I see the truth

You love me for who I am

Like the stars hold the moon

Right there where they belong

And I know I’m not alone”

7. “I Will Wait” by Mumford & Sons

Can you imagine worship at Awaken Church with M&S? Out of control.
Can you imagine worship at Awaken Church with M&S? Out of control.

I’m a huge M&S fan. Shamefully, my mom has seen them in concert more times than I have [she’s cooler]. But this song sounds like a psalm. Psalm 27:14 to be exact.

“So tame my flesh

And fix my eyes

A tethered mind freed from the lies

And I’ll kneel down,

Wait for now

I’ll kneel down,

Know my ground

Raise my hands

Paint my spirit gold

And bow my head

Keep my heart slow

‘Cause I will wait, I will wait for you

So that’s my list of pop songs that could be played on Christian radio.

What are some songs that’d you would add to this list?

Artist Spotlight Number 2: Josh Wilson

So, I just completed my second article for J103’s webpage. It’s about this up-and-coming singer/songwriter Josh Wilson. He’s pretty cool. He seems legit. And his music is actually something I’d listen too. So, if you don’t know who he is, you should check him out on iTunes. Above is one of his more popular songs. I hope you like it.

Here’s a link to the story I wrote if you want to check that out.

Anyways, there’s a few awesome things going on in my life. One, I was asked to be on the panel of interns in a Communications 101 class (they are discussing internships?). I’m pretty excited about that. I do enjoy my internship, and I think that the faculty can see that. So, it’s good to be acknowledged for that.

Two, EXTREME HOME MAKEOVER EDITION is coming to my town! Wahoooo! So exciting! I think this will make this town a better place. Well, anyways the reason I’m talking about it today is because J103 is doing some stuff for it. So, hopefully I’ll be able to tag along in some of that and get extra hours for my internship. Maybe I’ll get to meet Ty. Or just help paint something. That would be cool too.

Three, I have not heard from Africa yet. It has only been three weeks and three days since I’ve applied, so they still have time. But, I’m impatient. I want to know things. And I want to know them right now. Is this God’s timing? Is this even in His will for me to go? I hope that it is, and pray that it is, but you never know. He might want me in seminary, or in Nashville, or…. here. I say that like, “Anywhere but here!” But I don’t mean that. I like here; I’m just ready for there. Contentment is not my thing, obviously.

Four, our Women’s Retreat is this weekend! 🙂 I’m so excited. I wasn’t able to go last year, so I’m really excited that I get to go this year. I’m doing the music, so that’ll be interesting. I love so many worship songs that I don’t think most people will know, but I need to pick ones people are familiar with. I’ll let you know how that goes.

I have so much homework that I’m behind on. French is kicking my derrière.

I need to stop blogging right now.

Intern Mary :)

I really love the sound of that. It does have some sort of ring to it, doesn’t it? Well, I’ve started my internship at a Christian radio station called J103. My first day was on Monday. It was awesome. My first assignment was to write an article on Matthew West for the J103 website. So, I researched info about him and wrote a little ditty.

On Wednesday, I uploaded the story to the website (all by myself!) and put in a video. If you are wanting to read it, it’s found on the Artist Spotlight page. And then I revamped the J103 Top Ten List. You should check that out! The top ten songs are links to Youtube videos of that song. So, go look around the site, listen a little, and tell me what you think!

I love web stuff. I’m such a nerd. But computer programs and web development are so fun to me. Who knew I’d be a techie? Anyways, I have class in an hour and am going to meet Mrs. Kate Duggan in 25 minutes!

Enjoy the rest of your day!

ps- I can’t wait to update you on The Maze and the impact it had on our campus! Get excited!

God Speaks. We just have to listen.

Way-FM sends out this e-mail devotional every once in a while. Today’s devotional was taken from John 14:27 which says, “I am leaving you with a gift-peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” The commentary/devotional part of this message said this:

Are you afraid? Afraid of taking risks? Afraid of the future, of what might happen, of what won’t happen? Do you look at the world and have no idea where you belong or what you should be doing? Do you sense God leading you in a direction, but to get there feels like jumping into the deep waters of the ocean without a life jacket? You’re not alone.
Everyone has felt that way, or will feel that way, at some point in life. Taking risks is scary. The future can be scary because you don’t know what lies ahead. Feeling like you don’t fit in is scary. Following God can be scary, because sometimes he asks you to do something that you don’t understand or feel ready for. But you’re not alone.
God is with you. The ultimate provider is with you. He provides peace and wisdom, guidance, understanding. He will direct your path and give you everything that you need to go on the journey.

The cool thing about getting this devotional this morning was that I woke up thinking, “What am I going to do if one day I wake up and Africa is not on my mind and heart? What would be next?”

The awesome thing is that God has it all planned out for me. I don’t have to worry about what is next. God has plans for me and as long as I’m seeking Him first and foremost, I can’t mess those plans up. (Ha, and as I am typing this Chris Tomlin’s song Love comes on. The Watoto Children’s choir also sings this song with him. God’s funny. 🙂

I realized yesterday I’ve been inching towards God. I feel like I’m hesitantly walking blindly, but not trusting God enough to take big girl steps. It’s time to start taking strides and being certain of God’s faithfulness to preserve me (psalm 40). If I slip, I know He has me in the palms of His hands. I can never fall in a place that God cannot reach. Psalm 31:3&5 says,

For You are my rock and my fortress; and for your name’s sake You lead me and guide me.. into your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O LORD, faithful God.

He leads me and guides me not for my glory but for His. He leads me and guides me for His will to be done, not mine. I want this to be what I walk and live by. I’m ready to be stretched and grown. I’m ready to be asked to do things I know I am unable to do apart from God. I want to live a life that’s fully dependent on Him knowing He is who He says He is!
